Toth Takes BC Mid-Amateur Title
Harper reigns supreme in Master 40 Division

ROBERTS CREEK, B.C. (June 11, 2008) – Victoria’s Bryan Toth played some disciplined golf in the rain and cold to emerge as the winner at the 2008 B.C. Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship at the Sunshine Coast Golf & Country Club in Roberts Creek. Toth, the 2005 B.C. Men’s Mid-Amateur champion carded a 2-over par 74 for the day to finish as the only player under par at 1-under 215.

“I came here expecting nothing, but the first day was a real endurance test,” said Toth. “The rain let up on day 2 and I applied some course management. I was hitting every green and I putted very well.”

Daniel Brown of Kelowna, B.C. finished at 7-over 223 for runner-up position in the Mid-Amateur division followed by Mike McAleer of Vancouver, B.C. at 8-over par 224 for third. Last year’s Mid-Amateur champion, Ben Griffin of Victoria, B.C. claimed fourth at 8-over par 224.

In the Master 40 division, 2007 Canadian Club Champions Champion Sandy Harper of Nanaimo, B.C., posted a final day even-par to hold onto the title at 2-over 218. Local favourite, Mike Mannion of Gibsons, B.C. claimed second place with 6-over 222 followed by Harry Ferguson of Invermere, B.C. also at 6-over 222 for third. Brad Haw stands with a final 8-over 224 for fourth.

Representing B.C. at the Mid-Amateur Inter-provincial Team Championship at Pheasant Glen Golf Resort in Qualicum Beach, B.C. Aug. 18-22 will be Bryan Toth, Harry Ferguson, Mike Mannion and Sandy Harper. Sandy Harper and Ken Thompson from Nanaimo Golf Club prevailed as the winners of the club team competition.

The BC Mid Amateur Championship features two divisions: the Mid-Amateur Division for players aged 25-39, and the Master 40 Division for players aged 40 and above. There is a winner for each division, as well as an overall champion. The B.C. Team to the Canadian Championship will be made up of 4 players from this championship and 2 of the team must be over 40 years of age.

Bryan Toth Makes Move to Top of Leaderboard
Day 2 BC Men’s Mid-Amateur

ROBERTS CREEK, B.C. (June 10, 2008) – Despite yesterday’s steady rain, the course remains in excellent condition for the 2008 B.C. Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship at the Sunshine Coast Golf & Country Club in Roberts Creek.

Although, temperatures were still unseasonably cooler today, Bryan Toth of Victoria, B.C. managed to fire a 4-under par 68 for the best round of the day and a move to the top spot on the leaderboard at 3-under 141.

Defending Master 40 champion and B.C. Mid-Amateur team member, Sandy Harper of Nanaimo, B.C. played steady to sit tied with yesterday’s leader and 2007 B.C. Mid-Amateur champion, Ben Griffin of Victoria, B.C. at 2-over 146.

Jamie Ivers of Surrey, B.C. carded 1-over par 73 to finish the day tied for fourth at 4-over 148 with Brad Haw of North Vancouver, B.C. who shot 1-under par 71.

Following today’s round, the field was cut to the top 70 and ties for the final round.

The final round continues Wednesday morning. Final results will be sent out after the completion of the Championship.

Reigning Mid-Amateur Champion Leads BCGA Championship Series Opener at Sunshine Coast Golf & Country Club

ROBERTS CREEK, B.C. (June 9, 2008) – Reigning Mid-Amateur champion, Ben Griffin of Victoria, B.C. didn’t seem bothered by the steady onslaught of rain and wind on the first day of the BC Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship at Sunshine Coast Golf & Country Club in Roberts Creek. Griffin fired birdies on holes 3, 6, 8 and 16 to sit atop the leaderboard at 2-under par 70.

Jason Monteleone of Kelowna, B.C. finished the day in second place one stroke back of Griffin with 1-under par 71 followed by 1981 B.C. Amateur champion, Steve Berry of Vancouver, B.C. at even par 72.

Sunshine Coast Golf & Country Club Set to Host
BC Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship

VANCOUVER June 6, 2008
(BCGA)– Many of British Columbia’s top mid-amateur golfers will gather next week at the Sunshine Coast Golf & Country Club in Robert’s Creek, B.C., from June 9-11 for the 2008 B.C. Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship conducted by the British Columbia Golf Association.

Leading the field at Sunshine Coast Golf & Country Club will be defending champion Ben Griffin of Victoria, B.C. Griffin is also the 2007 Victoria City Amateur Champion.

Defending Mid-Master 40 Champion, reigning Canadian Club Champions Champion and 1980 B.C. Amateur Champion Sandy Harper of Nanaimo, B.C. will also be looking to add another title to his already impressive résumé.

Another past champion, Bryan Toth of Victoria, B.C., will be in the hunt looking for his second title. Toth earned his B.C. Men’s Mid-Amateur title in 2005, the next year he won the 2006 B.C. Amateur Championship.

Other notables include Steve Berry of Sooke, B.C., who won the B.C. Amateur in 1981 and the B.C. Mid-Amateur in 1994 and 1997; 1998 B.C. Amateur Champion Kurt Cassidy of Vancouver, B.C.; and 2000 B.C. Mid-Amateur Champion Don Gowan of Victoria.

Championship play will be conducted Monday, June 9 to Wednesday, June 11 with 18 holes of stroke play each day.  The event will be contested over 54 holes and after 36 holes the field will be reduced to the top 20 golfers with ties in the Mid-Amateur division and the top 45 and ties in the Master 40 division.
