Arnold Sherwood

Sherwood, Arnold - passed away peacefully with his family at his side, on March 22, 2008 at the Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital at the age of 72, after a short but courageous battle with cancer.  Arnie was born in Nelson, B.C. on November 24, 1935.

Arnie worked for the Provincial Government of British Columbia for 33 years - working in Nelson, Fernie, Kitimat and Rossland, retiring in 1989 as Government Agent for the West Kootenay Region . He then went on to be the Coroner for 13 years in the Kootenay Boundary Region working with many of the local professional and medical agencies.

Arnie was very involved in many community and sporting activities, including director with the British Columbia Golf Association for 30 years; in addition he was also involved with minor hockey and at the senior level as both a director and referee-in-chief for over 25 years. He was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #14, serving as Secretary and Vice President. Most recently Arnie served as a Director on the Board for the Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital Foundation and had been actively involved in the growth and development of the Foundations annual charity golf tournament.      

Golf was Arnie's game, winning his first championship at the age of 19, in the Nelson Labour Day Open, going on to win it 3 more times. In addition Arnie won a number of golf tournaments throughout the province as well as coaching at the provincial and national level with the BC Junior golf program. As Zone Director for the Kootenay's Arnie was instrumental in the development of a strong junior golf program that continues to support many of our young players today. In addition to his passion for the game of golf, Arnie was avid curler, achieving numerous successes in the curling arena including Senior and Masters Zone Championships as well as winning a number of local and regional bonspiels. In his youth, Arnie was quite the athlete and his achievements included high school basketball championships, ski jumping competition, downhill ski racing, and minor hockey, which also included playing for the Nelson Maple Leafs Senior team.

Above all Arnie had a passion for his family and his friends and a love of life; he was quite a character,  well loved and very thoughtful to all and his passing touches many hearts and he will not be forgotten. He is survived by his loving wife Phyllis of 49 years; his children Bob of Cranbrook, Bill of Los Angeles, California; Judy (Brian) Moroney of Rossland; Jennifer (Paul) Peterson of Calgary; grandchildren, Katie, Brenan, Ali, Trey, Emma and Nolan; his sister, Audrey Chrunik ; brother Ed Clem and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents Dorothy and Thomas Clem; sister Arlene and bother-in-law Dick Chrunik.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 29, 2008 1:PM at the Rossland Miners Hall....
