March 26, 1898: Spring golf tournament in Victoria

A large attendance and cold weather did not interfere with the fourth annual tournament of the Victoria Golf Club on March 26, 1898. Several members of the Tacoma and Vancouver clubs were entered in different matches.

 

The following is the day's report:

 

Harvey Combe

The gentlemen's open event for the championship of British Columbia, carrying also the handicap cup presented by Hewitt Bostock, M.P., was the first on the programme. F. L. Sterling defeated G. S. Holt by five holes up and four to play; L. B. Keyser, Vancouver, defeated S. Medlicot, Tacoma, by seven holes up and six to play; Mr. Eberly, of Tacoma, defeated W. V. Burrell of the same city by five holes up and four to play; Dr. Bell, Victoria, defeated C. Wood, Vancouver, by two holes up and one to play; Dr. Carruthers, Vancouver, defeated G. L. Munn, Tacoma, with five holes up and four to play; W. E. Olive, Victoria, defeated H. S. Griggs, Tacoma, by five holes up and four to play; Harvey Combe defeated W. A. Ward by six hole sup and five to play.

In the second heat Harvey Combe defeated C. F. Prior by three holes up and one to play; L. B. Keyers and F. L. Sterling tied in the eighteenth hole, Mr. Keyser winning in the nineteenth; Dr. Bell defeated W. A. Eberly and Mr. Olive defeated Mr. Carruthers.

Mrs. Combe is still lady champion, having yesterday defeated all competitors, the scores being:

Ladies Open Championship of British Columbia -- Mrs. Combe, 85; Miss Drake, 91; Mrs. Langley, 94; Mrs. Milbourne, 97; Miss Kershaw (Tacoma) 112; Miss Pooley, 114; Mrs. Medlicott (Tacoma) 114. Mrs. Barnard, Miss Finlayson and Miss Macnaughton returned no scores.
